Intelligent Design: The Year in Review from Law Evolution Science and Junk Science on December 23, 2006 10:11 PM

ID is dropping any pretense that it’s actually a scientific theory. The Wedge Document makes it plain that ID is simply a tactical weapon for use in the culture war (Whatever that is). So how is it doing? A few Read More

Cute. Now I’ll have the tune stuck in my head all day. :)

‘Tis the season to be jolly.

(sung to the tune of O CHRISTMAS TREE O CHRISTMAS TREE)

O Kitzmas vicTree, O Kitzmas vicTree, Your DI faces green delight us. They’re green when summer days are bright: They’re green when winter snow is white. O Kitzmas vicTree, O Kitzmas vicTree,, Your DI faces green delight us. The God for government was almost near You’ld change the country bit by bit So nobody would notice it And just to show that you’re sincere you’ll deny god was the designer here. The pocket watch on distant heath An image now outdated For you’re the new dead parrot-jim And we are educated So raise the cultured petrie dish The peer reviews, the cold hard facts And just to show that we’re sincere We’ll sing Kitzmas vicTree once a year

What’s the story with clogging student blog sites? Does that refer to the Cornell class website, or is there something that I actually missed from the past year? Many thanks.

Peurile.

And puerile, too.

Funny is that! Not even a “chunkdz” registered am I seeing.

Hmm. Too teensy a troll to bothered with being, thinking I am!

Now, shooh, you little trollkin…I bigger fish to fry am having!

“Purile” said Chunkdz. Hmmmm, the post struck a raw nerve? Ah, icing on the cake. (insert big cheezy grin here) Merry Christmas to you too. :)

puerile

You say that as if it were a bad thing. Next you’ll be complaining about Rudolf the Ned-Nosed Reindeer and Peter Pan.

Let’s see, we’ve now got three guesses: “peurile,” “puerile,” and “purile.”

Who, oh who, will win the troll spelling contest?

You say that as if it were a bad thing.

I do?

Oh good … I’m pleased in a way - if this is puerile then I’m really not sure what word you’d use to describe anyone who’d use a flash animation of a farting judge to put your point across.

If this is childish then I’m really not sure how WD should be considered

Puerile is just an apt description. I don’t know why anyone would take offense unless you were going for something more sophisticated. Were you?

Too teensy a troll to bothered with being, thinking I am!

You say that like it’s a bad thing.

The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language: Fourth Edition. 2000.

1) puerile. …Belonging to childhood; juvenile. 2. Immature; childish. See synonyms at young. Latin puerlis, from puer, child, boy.

I guess it could be argued that the “Twelve Days of Christmas” invokes memories of youthful holidays of yore. Or that utilizing a well-known carol as a scheme for ridiculing the abysmal “performance” of ID over the past year satisfies a juvenile urge that we haven’t quite outgrown. Or that coming up with the notion of using a song with twelve stanzas and twelve “gifts” to stand in for the twelve months of the past year and all that ID has detracted from that year isn’t, perhaps, clever beyond measure… Although that last one begins to seem require a bit more analytic thought than one ordinarily expects from young’uns. And then actually accurately tracking the pitifulness of ID’s offerings over the past year, juggling them with the timeline of various court decisions, and sequencing them correctly, hmmm, all that does seem a bit beyond the preoccupations, interests, and attention span of even the most precocious toddlers. But I think we’ve exceeded even the most charitable estimate of chunkdz’z comprehension here, so enough’s enough and all’s well that ends well, in a tale well told.

chunkdz, insignificant troll:

You say that like it’s a bad thing.

Nursey, humming to herself, poking around, looking behind the drapes and furniture, waving aside the dust bunnies…

Marky, oh Marky…! Out come, out come… Tum-dee, tum-dum…

Nursey, backing up, as she peers into another low, dark niche. Ker-r-runch!!

Ack! That, what was…? Ach, by Huginn and Muninn, what here has passed!

Oh, these remains must being all what left is of that little troll I so recently seeing have…!

Schade! What name it having been? Chuck? Chump?

Anyways, so sad, the tiny little trollkin, underfoot having been, just like a little crunchy cockroach…!

Puerile is just an apt description. I don’t know why anyone would take offense unless you were going for something more sophisticated. Were you?

It’s funny when the IDiot trolls assume that others are as dumb as they are.

How’s this for puerile:

The fourth day!

Puerile is not necessarily bad when attempting a creative spoof. But if the content is pueril, the delivery has to be sophisticated in order to give the proper sense of irony. Weird Al has mastered this. Has Steve Steve? Invoking the likes of Lehrer and Yankovich as peers in musical spoof demands that a certain level of creative achievement be accomplished. Steve Steve is at an immediate disadvantage having not been able to actually produce music for the listener to enjoy. But of course, clever lyrics and a familiar tune can carry a satirical spoof if done well. The most obvious criticism is that rhythmically, the spoof simply doesn’t match the original’s meter and 16th note syncopation. This is not necessarily a bad thing either, as awkward rhythm can be an effective device in a humorous knock-off, but it should be used sparingly. The rampant rhythmic dysfunction throughout the “12 days of DISCO” belies a lazy approach, and a lack of ingenuity. The next most obvious criticism will be found in the title of the song. The word DISCO, an obscure inside reference to the Discovery Institute, neither rhymes with Christmas or even has anything to do with the holiday. Again a lack of imagination is evident. Disco being a rather lame musical genre merely adds to the confusion. Also, why is there a reference to yodelers, when there is no yodelling in the song? The non-sequiters begin to accumulate. The use of Judge Jones bashing twice in the song seems unnecessarily redundant. It doesn’t seem to carry enough pejorative weight to merit the doubling. Certainly there must be something funnier and more creative to satirize creationists with. Also, the fifth day is generally the most memorable verse in the song (Five Golden Rings in the original). While “more Sternberg spin” matches the syncopation of the original, it doesn’t carry any humorous connotation, or enough historical significance to make the reference memorable. The 12th day reference to “Cobb county pro-science victory” likewise seems a weak way to bring the song home. A funnier approach might have been to capitalize on the failure of the DI, rather than the victory for science. “A Debacle in Cobb County” or something similar to emphasize the failure of the fundies, as failure is always funnier than smug victory.

In the end, what had the potential to be an effective satire seems squandered because of a lack of imagination. This is only emphasized by the invocation of Lehrer, Yankovich, and Overwhelming Evidence, who all have produced meticulous and meaningful satire. The 12 Days of DISCO simply suffers from an obviously hurried approach, and little attention to detail. The funniest part of the whole presentation is perhaps the oddly dressed panda wielding Santa who seems to be badly in need of a jockstrap. But alas, even this is not enough to save this poor example of musical satire.

Shuddup, troll.

Talking (or singing) about peer-reviewed work, over at AIG there’s a research competition for aspiring creation scientists:
