University of Iowa: public lecture on “Evolution, Intelligent Design and Faith” on March 25.

The University of Iowa hosts a public lecture on public lecture on “Evolution, Intelligent Design and Faith” on March 25. reports the DesMoines Register

The free lecture is at 7 p.m. in Kollros Auditorium, Room 101 of the Biology Building East on the Iowa City campus.

The talk will feature H. Allen Orr, a biology professor at the University of Rochester. Orr is visiting the U of I campus that week as an Ida Beam Distinguished Visiting Professor. A reception will follow the lecture.

Orr’s lecture is co-sponsored by the Departments of Biology and Geoscience in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the Office of the Provost.

On the same topic, but from a 180 degree opposite point of view, our law school invited one Henry Schaeffer from the Discovery Institute to speak at our university. We have found a published transcript of his talk, information relating to his claims to have been nominated 5 times for a Nobel prize, and a few more tidbits from PT, Talk Origins, and some other sources. Anybody know anything else? Seen him talk?

I know that Nobel Prize nominations are kept secret by the Nobel committee for something like fifty years, and there’s a long list of qualifications for nominators that’s delimited by “or” instead of “and” (meaning, for example, that just about any university professor of humanities or something like that is qualified to nominate someone for the Nobel Peace Prize), so being nominated for a Nobel prize is both impossible to verify and quite meaningless. This information is freely available on the Nobel committee’s website.
