E! Reviews: Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed

expelled movie exposedE! Reviews gives it an “F”

Review in a Hurry: A flunkout of a documentary, this features Ben Stein—still best known for his monotone “Anyone…anyone?”—advocating creationism, er, intelligent design, in science classrooms. Stein’s credibility is blown on this poorly constructed diatribe, and you’d be smart to save your bucks.

Well, today’s the day when this load of horse evidence comes out like a weary and haggard debutant on the arm of her Gomezian father. I expect the coming-out will be the usual affair; lots of swooning amongst the faithful (Ken Ham has already swooned mightly), disgust & disdain from the scientific community, and everyone else just getting on with their lives.

If what I have read, here & elsewhere, is anything like correct, this turkey will convince only the already convinced, and not have a much of a run. I wonder; will it eventually show up on the Discovery Channel?

Review: Stein shuns intelligent debate in dishonest ‘Expelled’

… “Oddly enough, the tactics employed in “Expelled” undercut the movie’s argument, most notably in the interviews with Dawkins and Myers and in Stein’s trip to Darwin’s British home (now a museum). Either the filmmakers suckered these participants under false pretenses, or the evolutionists are more open to debate than Stein suggests. Perhaps the intelligent-design proponents know that in a truly open debate, their argument isn’t fit enough to survive. “

… or this one from the Seattle Times

According to “Expelled,” Darwinism responsible for everything from atheism to abortion

“ …A hard-core, fundamentalist bit of right-wing propaganda, “Expelled” slyly appropriates its style from liberal and left-wing sources, sending Ben Stein out to do deadpan interviews with a grab-bag of people, while intercutting old movies, new animation and newsreel footage.

This is all fine — a number of comedy shows and documentaries have been hard-core, left-wing propaganda, serving up more red-meat entertainment than useful information. But Jon Stewart is a lot funnier than Stein”

This is a good quote from the Baltimore Sun

“ The most rational, genuinely effective way to deal with Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed is to not be drawn into its web, to simply ignore it.”

LoL :-)

My my, here we are on the “Day of the Great Awakening”. I wonder if Keith will make an appearance?

Nice one.

Awakening? I thought it was supposed to be Waterloo.

The New York Times weighs in (registration is required but free):

Resentment Over Darwin Evolves Into a Documentary

The opening sentence says it best:

One of the sleaziest documentaries to arrive in a very long time, "Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed" is a conspiracy-theory rant masquerading as investigative inquiry.

I imagine BS will eventually shake his fist in our collective faces and drawl the Scooby-Doo villain’s parting words, in the mean-and-angry form of his typical drawl: “…and I’d have gotten away with it, if it wasn’t for you meddling biologists!”

From the end of the NYT review:

“Expelled” is rated PG (Parental guidance suggested). It has smoking guns and drunken logic.

Sean P. Means of the Salt Lake Tribune Wrote:

Means is being far too charitable to the scam artists.

The filmmakers did sucker these participants under false pretenses (“Crossroads” anyone?), and the “evolutionists” are more open to debate than Stein suggests. The intelligent-design proponents do know - no “perhaps” about it - that in a truly open debate, their argument isn’t fit enough to survive.

You guys sound like you’re running scared. OF A FILM! Ha! Dare you to see it. By the way, it is not as much an argument in favor of ID, but rather than argument against orthodoxy and intolerance in science. What are you so afraid of. If you everyone had been as orthodox as you in Darwin’s time, his work would have never seen the light of day.

but rather than argument against orthodoxy and intolerance in science.

Aha, a strawman at best thus.

Why should we be afraid of a film that has gotten a worse score than the box office abomination Ishtar?

It’s like I said in a previous thread: there is no discrimination, there is only quality control, and the fact of the matter is that Intelligent Design proponents have been completely unwilling to do any science, or make any contribution to science.

I also said previously, in that Intelligent Design is not a science, and no amount of spin doctoring or Hollywood movie magic can change this sad little fact.

And having said those, “Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed” has proven to be a colossal failure on its premier day. So, then, please explain to us why you think we’re upset because a movie that we think is a pack of lies has flopped.

Listen smartypants, you guys all remind me of all the evangelicals who protested The Last Temptation of Christ, never having seen it. You shoot down the things that offend your beliefs just like the least scientific of the faithful. You have so much more in common with people you despise and just like them you’re too insecure to even see a movie but instead will bash it in all your blind rage. So perhaps you don’t want your dough to go to Stein? Fine, buy tickets for Horton Hoo whatever and then wander into Expelled instead. Stanton I’m not an advocate of ID to be honest (neither do I have your apparent faith that Evolution is a bullet-proof theory that should never be called into question by anyone ever, in any way, period, end of story, class dismissed! Last I checked hypotheses were to be tested); but I think you guys and many in the science community act like a bunch of Brown Shirts. Enemies of discourse can never be champions of freedom and even less champions of science. Give me a shout when you do your annual fund raiser book-burning extravaganza! Good night you smarmy know-it-alls!

well said maceo.

(neither do I have your apparent faith that Evolution is a bullet-proof theory that should never be called into question by anyone ever, in any way, period, end of story, class dismissed! Last I checked hypotheses were to be tested);

You are of course correct, hypotheses and theories should be tested and the theory of evolution is tested many times a week. It can also be called into question. However, if a particular objection has been made and found to lack substance there is no virtue in reconsidering the same objection three times a day for the next fifty years. Do you know of any objection to the theory of evolution that IDers/Creationists have made recently that has arisen in the last 50 years? Agreed, Paley’s watch has been reworded since then but it’s essentially the same objection, life’s too complicated. Any other? (I’m not asking for evidence as we all know they have none.)
