A religious movement in Nigeria aims to establish a government, which I can only describe as a paradise for the Discovery Institute.
If their name is uncertain, however, their mission appears clear enough: to overthrow the Nigerian state, impose an extreme interpretation of Islamic law and abolish what they term “Western-style education”. …
In an interview with the BBC, the group’s leader, Mohammed Yusuf, said such education “spoils the belief in one god”.
“There are prominent Islamic preachers who have seen and understood that the present Western-style education is mixed with issues that run contrary to our beliefs in Islam,” he said.
“Like rain. We believe it is a creation of god rather than an evaporation caused by the sun that condenses and becomes rain.
“Like saying the world is a sphere. If it runs contrary to the teachings of Allah, we reject it. We also reject the theory of Darwinism.”
Sounds familiar, dunnit?
They used the term “Darwinism”?
Who writes their press releases, the Discovery Institute?
Intelligent Precipitation?
Denial of the water cycle? Could that be why that part of the world is largely desert?
And now, apparently, there’s somebody who wants it to stay that way?

I posted a while ago on PT that there were still a few Flat Earthers around. Another poster said he didn’t believe it.
Well, here we are. The Koran says the earth is flat and many Koranic scientists do also.
FWIW, many fundie xians including the Dishonesty Institute, openly hate the USA. They want to overthrow the US government, set up a theocracy, and head on back to the Dark Ages. They aren’t hiding anything, they say so often. The DI is funded by Xian Dominionist money and it is all in the Wedge document.
Just in case anybody thinks Raven is exaggerating, see http://thriceholy.net/flatearth.html. Mohammed doesn’t seem to have known the earth is a sphere, and thus the Koran doesn’t seem to know the earth is a sphere.
Gotta love that site.
Conclusive proof that all the other religions of the world use holy books full of fantasies and lies - except, of course, Christianity, which uses the correct holy book and is therefore inerrant.
The bible says the earth is flat too. And square. The sky is held up by 4 pillars and the stars are just lights stuck on it. The moon is a self illuminated disk.
Some fundies believe it. Hey, if you throw logic, reason, and the accumulated knowledge of 2,000 years out the window, absolutely anything is possible.
Except things they don’t agree with. Even 2000 years ago it was known that the Earth was round.
And rain falls when somebody up there opens a window…
Actually the Discovery Institute would not be happy. Schools in the northern states of Nigeria are so impoverished that it is almost impossible to find teachers. As a rule the schools are staffed by teachers with a sense of “mission”. Trouble is the missionaries are evangelical Christians. Since the northern states are predominantly Muslim it is probably the spread of Christian doctrines rather than evolution that these nutters are concerned about.
Sometimes, I wish I had been born in the 24th century.
